DIWATA-1 is a program of Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Philippine Scientific Earth Observation Micro-Satellite (PHL-Microsat) Program. It is a 50kg satellite that was produced by nine Filipino engineers in collaboration with scientists and engineers from Tohoku University and Hokkaido University.
Aside from Diwata-1, there were two satellites, Agila-1 and Agila-2 (later renamed ABS-3) but it was not owned by the Philippines.
"Diwata-1" makes it historical launched earlier today (March 23, 2016) at 10:00 AM. This satellite will help the Philippines to determine the depth of destruction of calamities/ disasters. It can also monitor the location of typhoons. It is also possible that we may oversee the changes in cultural sites
or forest monitoring and national security.
Diwata-1 will enhance the proficiency of weather forecasting through PAGASA.
Does this mean that we will be able to prepare before typhoon comes? We're hoping for the best!
